Pedal Power with Bikeability

Summer 2023
Bikeability, the government’s national cycle training programme, is on a mission to help 5 million children ride confidently and more often by 2025. In summer, in partnership with The Active Wellbeing Society, Bring it on Brum! offered an exhilarating 680 cycling opportunities across 8 districts in Birmingham.
Summer 2023 Highlights:
- 45% of participants learned to pedal for the first time.
- 55% completed their Level 1 confidence-building course.
“Excellent! Thank you so much. Real added value, and the kids and parents love it. Most kids completed Learn to Ride Level 1, and I plan to take older ones out for Level 2 in the future.” Andy Brown, Oasis Hobmoor
The Active Wellbeing Society collaborates with schools and organisations across Birmingham, bringing Bikeability to their doorsteps. This initiative offers young people essential cycle training on-site and on the road, teaching them a vital life skill.
“We have several children with special educational needs who all participated in Bikeability. Because we didn’t have massive groups, staff could spend one-on-one time with the kids who needed extra support. This made a real difference and meant they really got to grips with riding a bike well.” Holiday Club Provider
Bikeability and Bring it on Brum! are empowering the next generation of confident cyclists, making Birmingham’s roads a friendlier place for young riders.
Summer 2025
Bring it on Brum! continue to include the Bikeability programme as an offer to holiday club providers in Birmingham. In Summer 2025, Bikeability operated across 24 venues, enabling 1924 children and young people to take part in cycling sessions.
Summer 2025 Highlights:
- Learn to Ride Sessions – 612 Participants
- Balance Training – 199 Participants
- Level 1 Cycling – 1052 Participants
